The welfare of pigs raised in free-range systems, known as SISCAL (Free-Range Farming System), is a fundamental concern in the pig production industry. This farming system stands out for offering a more natural and spacious environment for pigs compared to conventional confinement systems. The general objective of this work was to analyze and understand how this system influences the welfare of pigs, considering environmental, behavioral, management and health factors. We seek to examine the advantages and challenges associated with Siscal, evaluate the positive impact of this system on pig welfare, in addition to identifying best practices and strategies to optimize the environment and care of animals in this context. The present study used bibliographic research as a fundamental method for data acquisition, using the exploration of databases that house a vast amount of research and literature related to the research topic. Raising pigs in confinement systems requires a holistic approach that takes into account the environment, management and welfare of the animals. Research and awareness on these issues are critical to improving pig production practices and ensuring that pigs live a healthy and dignified life. Understanding and applying measures to improve the environment and welfare of pigs is not only ethical, but also beneficial to the pig industry as a whole.
