This study aimed to conduct a literature review on the relationship between animal welfare
and different broiler chicken production systems, considering conceptual, behavioral,
environmental, and economic aspects. National and international studies addressing animal
welfare principles, particularly the Five Freedoms, were analyzed, as well as their influence
on zootechnical performance, health, mortality, and meat quality. The findings indicate that
the adoption of adequate management practices, environmental control, stocking density,
and nutrition promotes better welfare conditions for broiler chickens, positively affecting
productivity and reducing economic losses. In addition, the growing consumer demand for
ethically and sustainably produced animal products highlights the importance of
implementing animal welfare strategies throughout the poultry production chain. It is
concluded that integrating animal welfare into broiler production systems represents not only
an ethical commitment but also an essential technical and economic strategy for the
sustainability of poultry farming.
