DOENÇA PERIODONTAL E SUA INFLUÊNCIA NO CONTROLE METABÓLICO DA DIABETES

O diabetes mellitus (DM) é uma doença crônica que acomete a população de todo o mundo, segundo a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS). A taxa de aumento da prevalência é considerada uma epidemia. Indivíduos com a doença são aqueles com controle metabólico cronicamente ruim podendo sofrer complicações microvasculares e macrovasculares, atribuindo problemas significativos. A gengivite e a doença periodontal (DP) são as doenças periodontais (DPs) que mais acometem a população. A DPé caracterizada pela destruição dos tecidos de inserção periodontal é muito menos comum que a gengivite e ainda assim afeta aproximadamente 5 a 15% de qualquer população. A DM e a DP são consideradas biologicamente ligadas por alguns estudos. As evidências atuais sobre o vínculo biológico entre DM e DP apoiam que indivíduos com DM podem apresentar desregulação metabólica, causando uma hiperglicemia persistente e levando a uma resposta imunoinflamatória exagerada, resultando em destruição mais rápida e grave do tecido periodontal. Nesse sentido, o principal objetivo deste estudo é uma análise da prevalência e relação entre as DPs e DM, e avaliação dos fatores que estão associadas à incidência desses problemas através de uma revisão bibliográfica e de artigos.
