This article addresses the influence of assistive technology on the lives of people with physical disabilities. Technology has evolved exponentially in recent years in several areas, including health. Assistive technology aims to improve the quality of life of people with physical disabilities, facilitating and enabling the performance of activities, providing autonomy and independence, generating positive effects both individual and social. The applications of assistive technology encompass activities of daily living, in education, work and leisure, which imply different relationships with quality of life. Assistive technology aims to improve the functionality of people with disabilities. The term functionality should be understood in a greater sense than ability to perform tasks of interest. Assistive technology has categories, which are: Aids for daily living, Augmentative and alternative communication, Computer accessibility resources, Environmental control systems, Architectural projects for accessibility, Orthoses and prostheses, Postural adequacy, Mobility aids, Aids for the blind or with low vision, Aids for the deaf or hearing impaired and Adaptations in vehicles.
