Abstract

Sheep and goat farming has been expanding in Brazil, and along with this growth, concerns about parasitic diseases, especially those caused by Haemonchus contortus, are also growing, as they compromise the performance and health of the animals. Among the management alternatives, the FAMACHA© method stands out as a simple, low-cost, and efficient tool for identifying degrees of anemia and guiding the more conscious use of anthelmintics. In addition to contributing to reducing parasite resistance, new research indicates that the method can be associated with technologies such as image analysis and machine learning, expanding its application potential. Despite the advances, the system still has limitations and should be used in conjunction with other management strategies.
