LABELING OF COFFEES MARKETED IN TERESINA-PIAUÍ

This study aimed to evaluate the labeling compliance of coffees sold in establishments in Teresina-PI, based on current Brazilian legislation. Twenty-two commercial brands were analyzed, belonging to the categories Traditional, Extra Strong, Superior, Gourmet, and Special, selected according to availability at points of sale. Data collection was carried out through photographic documentation of the packaging, followed by the application of a checklist developed based on SDA Ordinance No. 570/2022 and RDC No. 727/2022. The results indicated a high level of overall compliance (86.36%), although some specific nonconformities were identified, mainly related to the absence of mandatory information, such as caffeine content, preparation method, gluten declaration, and quality certification. In contrast, items such as sales name, type of coffee, roast level, species, net content, expiration date, and manufacturer identification showed full compliance. Analysis by category showed that Traditional and Extra Strong coffees achieved 100% compliance, while the Special, Gourmet, and Superior categories concentrated on the main inadequacies. However, the chi-square test did not show a statistically significant association between product category and labeling compliance. Limitations include the small sample size, convenience sampling, and the scarcity of studies in the area, factors that restrict the generalization of the findings. Nevertheless, the study contributes to highlighting gaps in compliance with regulations, reinforcing the need for greater rigor in labeling to ensure transparency of information, food safety, and consumer confidence.
