STUDENT COST-QUALITY (CAQ): STATE OF THE ART FROM 1996 TO 2025

This article aims to conduct a state-of-the-art review of Brazilian academic production, consisting of doctoral theses and master’s dissertations registered in the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) Thesis and Dissertation Catalog and in the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD), covering the period from 1996 to 2025, with emphasis on the Initial Student Cost-Quality (CAQi) and the Student Cost-Quality (CAQ). The analysis includes a total of 78 academic works and seeks to highlight the implications of the mismatch between legal provisions that guarantee the right to quality education and the effective materialization of this right. The results indicate an expansion in scientific production and thematic diversity, while also revealing gaps in areas such as the Amazon, Rural Education, and Special Education. It is concluded that, despite theoretical advances, there is a need for deeper methodological and empirical approaches to support public policies guided by equity and the assurance of educational quality.
