The Challenges of the Nursing Team in the Implementation of Palliative Care in the Neonatal ICU.

The palliative care provided in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to newborns up to the 28th day has the opportunity to offer assistance and improve the quality of life of newborns who are in the final process of life or facing an illness with no probability of cure. Objective: To understand the difficulties and challenges of the nursing team in implementing palliative care in the neonatal ICU. Method: An integrative bibliographic review was carried out through a systematic search in electronic databases on the study topic. Results: 30 articles were found and, after filtering them with the inclusion criteria, 15 articles were selected for study. Discussion: The literature points out that the main difficulties faced by the nursing team in implementing palliative care in the Neonatal ICU are the difficulty in communication between team members and the unpreparedness of health care personnel when faced with situations involving death. The main challenges were identified as the need to build institutional protocols and training for professionals working in these sectors. Conclusion: Given the challenges highlighted, for assistance in pediatric palliative care to be effective and humanized, nurses need specific technical training, which enables them to develop the skills and competencies necessary to care for newborns in palliative care.
