The increase in the elderly population in Brazil is one of the factors contributing to the increase in this population in Long-Term Care Facilities for the Elderly (LTCFs). Due to their physical and emotional frailties and lack of family support, institutionalized elderly individuals can experience loneliness and depression. Recreational activities are important strategies for promoting self-esteem, socialization, and well-being. This qualitative study will describe the experience of Physical Education resident students from the UESPI Multiprofessional Residency Program in Family Health at an LTCF in Teresina, Piauí. Between May and August, on Wednesday afternoons, recreational activities and physical exercises were carried out, previously planned, with organized materials. These activities served as an important alternative in LTCFs, promoting engagement and enjoyment, despite the limitations. The growing participation of elderly individuals revealed the value of planned and humane interventions, as well as the need for ongoing support for institutions, with adequate resources and comprehensive care.
