Abstract

Abstract
Selective waste collection is essential for environmental preservation, as it allows the separation of waste such as paper, plastic, glass, and organic matter, in addition to facilitating recycling and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. To ensure its effectiveness, awareness campaigns are essential, encouraging proper waste separation. To this end, the objective of this article was to promote understanding of the importance of environmental protection and encourage behavioral changes in society, such as the proper disposal of solid waste in designated containers. The initiative took place through a Faculty outreach project – FACELI, aimed at children in grades 1-5 of elementary school near the Faculty. It included: a discussion group with the principal; making recyclable trash cans from 20L butter buckets; a lecture on selective waste collection with students; and the placement of trash cans made from recyclable materials in the schoolyard. The results indicate that the students understood the importance of proper solid waste disposal, as they applied the learning gained in the school environment.
