ORAL HEALTH LITERACY AMONG ADOLESCENTS:DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A FLIPCHART

Effective health communication is essential to promote healthy behaviors and strengthen oral health literacy (OHL), especially among adolescents, who have unique biopsychosocial characteristics and engagement challenges. This study aimed to describe the process of developing and validating the content of the flipchart "Oral Health for Adolescents: A Guide to Self-Care," designed as an educational technology aimed at promoting OHL among adolescents. This is a methodological study with a qualitative and quantitative approach, developed in five stages: literature review; development of the thematic outline and illustrations; content validation by expert judges; evaluation of appearance and language by adolescents; and descriptive analysis of the results. The material was developed based on the conceptual model of Sørensen et al. (2012), encompassing the dimensions of access, understanding, evaluation, and application of health information. The illustrations were created based on everyday situations from the adolescents' school and family life, fostering identification and engagement. Ten expert judges from the fields of Dentistry, Public Health, Education, and Communication participated in the validation process, evaluating the criteria of clarity, coherence, relevance, and cultural appropriateness. The Content Validity Index (CVI) showed values above 0.80 for all criteria. The adolescents' evaluations confirmed the visual attractiveness, textual clarity, and relevance of the educational messages. The conclusion is that the flipchart constitutes an effective soft-hard technology to support educational initiatives, strengthen the LSB, and promote autonomous and conscious self-care behaviors among adolescents.
