DIAGNOSIS OF SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN WASTE MANAGEMENT BY THE NURSING TEAM AT BETTINA FERRO DE SOUZA UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Environmental diagnosis is a management tool that assesses an enterprise’s performance in its relationship with the environment, highlighting strengths and weaknesses. It aimed to diagnose the environmentally sustainable actions and strategies carried out by the nursing team at Bettina Ferro de Souza University Hospital (HUBFS) in the management of healthcare waste. This is a non‑participatory, observational, exploratory and descriptive study conducted at HUBFS, a university hospital of the Federal University of Pará, which is a reference center in otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology and child growth and development. Data were collected using a structured observational checklist applied in care and support units (outpatient clinics, surgical center, central sterile supply department and inpatient ward), covering the stages of waste generation, segregation, packaging, storage, transport and final disposal. The findings showed a predominance of general waste, followed by infectious, biological and sharps waste, as well as segregation failures such as the mixing of infectious and general waste in critical sectors. No separation of recyclable materials was observed in any of the units and there was no local database on waste, which limits the monitoring of sustainability indicators. All professionals observed reported not having received documented training on the Healthcare Waste Management Plan (PGRSS) and not having participated in specific continuing education processes on the topic, which represents a major institutional challenge. Nevertheless, basic disposal routines in labeled containers and final disposal by a specialized company were observed, in partial compliance with current legislation. It is concluded that the nursing team plays a central role in waste management but faces gaps in training, infrastructure and monitoring, which hinders the consolidation of sustainable practices. The study supports the development of a best‑practice manual to standardize actions, strengthen continuing education and improve the implementation of the PGRSS at HUBFS.
