ETHNOGRAPHIC PHOTOGRAPHY ON COMBÚ ISLAND (PA): A FIELD RESEARCH ON THE PERCEPTION OF THE SUSTAINABLE, ARCHITECTURAL, AND CULTURAL

The Combú Island, located near the city of Belém-PA, is an insular space undergoing significant changes due to the rapid growth of tourism and real estate speculation. Recognized as an Environmental Protection Area by State Law No. 6.083/1997, the island aims to preserve floodplain ecosystems, biodiversity, and endangered species. However, this economic growth brings environmental and social challenges such as habitat degradation, displacement of riverside populations, and alterations in traditional cultural practices. This study employs ethnographic photography combined with a field diary to conduct a qualitative analysis of the perceptions of residents and visitors regarding the sustainable environment, vernacular architecture, and local culture of Combú Island. The research highlights the importance of using local materials and traditional construction techniques aligned with principles of sustainable architecture and valorization of riverside knowledge. Ethnographic photography is essential for capturing both the material and symbolic dimensions of the relationship between community, built space, and environment. Bridging traditional knowledge and technological innovation can strengthen environmental governance and promote more conscious tourism practices, contributing to sustainable local development. Projects such as the Amazon Ecomuseum stand out as initiativ es that value the island’s natural and cultural heritage, despite the need for effective strategies to control impacts from predatory tourism. In conclusion, the convergence of environmental conservation, promotion of riverside culture, and sustainable architecture constitutes an integrated and necessary approach to ensure the ecological and social balance of Combú Island.
