SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN LENÇÓIS (BA): BETWEEN ECOLOGICAL TOURISM AND ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION

Lençóis, located in Chapada Diamantina (Bahia), stands out for its natural and historical-cultural heritage, establishing itself as a reference for regional ecological tourism. However, local sustainable development presents contradictions: on one hand, high vegetation coverage and extensive protected areas; on the other, persistent deficiencies in urban infrastructure, basic sanitation, and institutional capacity. This article aims to analyze the interactions and associations between the dynamics of ecological tourism and the sustainable development of Lençóis, based on Sustainable Development Indicators (SDI) across environmental, economic, social, and institutional dimensions. A qualitative and exploratory approach is adopted, grounded in secondary data from IBGE, MapBiomas, SEI-BA, and SENATRAN, including a comparative analysis with Bahia's state-level parameters. Results indicate that while ecotourism contributes to environmental preservation (expressed as 87.3% of native vegetation coverage) and dynamic local employment, the fragility of territorial governance limits the conversion of natural capital into social well-being, evidenced by high informality and urban infrastructure deficits. It is concluded that institutional strengthening and the adoption of integrated public policies oriented toward territorial justice are essential conditions for consolidating tourism as an effective driver of regional sustainable development.
