A obesidade é uma doença complexa que consiste em ter uma quantidade excessiva de gordura corporal. A obesidade não é apenas um problema estético, é um problema de saúde que precisa de ajuda médica, e que aumenta o risco de doenças e problemas de saúde, como doenças cardíacas, diabetes, pressão alta e certos tipos de câncer. Existem muitas razões pelas quais algumas pessoas têm dificuldade em perder peso. A obesidade é geralmente o resultado de fatores hereditários, fisiológicos e ambientais combinados com dieta, atividade física e escolhas de exercícios. Evidências epidemiológicas acumuladas na última década confirmaram a definição da obesidade como uma doença de origem complexa e multifatorial, envolvendo a interação de dimensões biológicas, genéticas, comportamentais, socioeconômicas e ambientais. A terapia de combinação dirigida contra múltiplos mecanismos reguladores que contribuem para a obesidade pode permitir uma maior redução de peso por meio de efeitos aditivos, complementares ou sinérgicos.
