Abstract

A Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) adota definições de padrões de aleitamento materno (AM) reconhecidas mundialmente, que também são utilizadas no Brasil. O leite materno é composto dos nutrientes essenciais que um bebê precisa nos primeiros seis meses de vida. O início oportuno da amamentação garante que os bebês recebam o colostro, 'o primeiro leite materno', que contém anticorpos que protegem o recém-nascido contra doenças. O presente artigo buscou analisar a importância do aleitamento materno nos primeiros meses de vida. Conclui-se que é consenso que o leite materno é o alimento mais completo para os lactentes, principalmente nos primeiros meses de vida, pois é fonte de nutrientes em quantidades adequadas para um organismo em desenvolvimento. Além de nutritivo, o leite materno protege contra infecções, evita hospitalizações e reduz a morbidade por diarreia e infecções respiratórias, previne episódios de otite média e asma e diminui a mortalidade por síndrome da morte súbita infantil.
