Abstract

The transition to higher education can be a period of stress and adaptation difficulties, impacting students' mental health and favoring the appearance of disorders such as depression and anxiety. Factors such as low frequency of recreational activities, dissatisfaction with academic performance, and lack of emotional support are considered risks to mental health. Furthermore, the overload of activities, financial difficulties, and high expectations increase psychological suffering. Institutional neglect regarding the psychosocial needs of students also contributes to this scenario. The use of psychostimulants, such as Ritalin®️, has been growing among university students, especially in the health field, aiming to improve concentration and reduce mental fatigue. Brazil was the second largest consumer of Ritalin®️ in 2017. Studies indicate that many students begin using the medication without a prescription, which can cause adverse effects such as insomnia, dependence, and increased anxiety. Given this reality, this study aims to characterize the impact of psychotropic drug use on the mental health of university students, analyzing the psychological and behavioral effects. This is an integrative review of the scientific literature, with data collection carried out in scientific databases such as the Virtual Health Library (VHL), including the Lilacs, SciELO, and PubMed platforms, using controlled descriptors extracted from DeCS (Descriptors in Health Sciences). This study analyzed the consumption of psychotropic drugs among university students, a phenomenon driven by academic pressure and the pursuit of high performance. The results indicate a high prevalence of non-medical use of psychostimulants, such as methylphenidate, and antidepressants, especially among students in the health sciences. This practice, often initiated during undergraduate studies to cope with anxiety and fatigue, is associated with risks of dependence and adverse effects. It concludes that institutional mental health policies are necessary to combat this indiscriminate use, promoting student well-being.
