The use of medicinal plants in a wide variety of pharmaceutical forms has been prominent for a long time and they are used in the treatment of various diseases. In this article, we highlight the importance of studying medicinal plants as alternative therapies in the treatment of depression. Species such as Melissa officinalis, Passiflora incarnata, Hypericum perforatum and Crocus sativus stand out in the literature for their robust clinical results. A literature review was therefore carried out using the PubMed and Web of Science databases. The literature argues that alternative treatment or treatment associated with medicinal plants can be used to treat anxiety disorder and depression at different levels, since clinical studies show that they can be as effective as or more effective when compared to traditional treatments, but with fewer adverse events. In addition, phytotherapics are well accepted by the general population, which can favor adherence to treatment.
