INTRODUCTION: Historically, patients have created the expectation of pain in the face of dental treatment, thus generating fear and anxiety in this public. In order to minimize this scenario, the impact of phytotherapy as a treatment for anxiety has currently been studied. Therefore, the objective of this review is to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of treatment with Passiflora incarnata in reducing anxiety in patients during dental treatment. METHODOLOGY: For this review, Pubmed, Scopus, Web Of Science, Embase and Cochrane databases were used. In the search strategy, the MeSH descriptors were used: “Anti-Anxiety Agents”, “Phytotherapy, Passiflora”, “Dental Anxiety” and Patients. There was no restriction regarding the language or publication date of the selected studies, the inclusion criteria for articles were: addressing the use of passion flower in the context of treating anxiety in patients undergoing dental treatments. Articles that addressed study designs in animal models were excluded; or that evaluated patients who use allopathic medications chronically for anxiety. RESULTS: Among the 240 pre-selected articles, 30 articles were chosen to compose this review, in addition, 6 of these articles were highlighted as the main results of the research as they faithfully covered all inclusion criteria. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that the use of Passiflora incarnata L. to reduce anxiety in patients during dental treatment is effective and safe, because when compared to other drugs, it has a lower probability of side effects and does not lead to dependence.
