Policy on Volume Numbering and Digital Preservation

Policy on Volume Numbering and Digital Preservation

REMUNOM – Multidisciplinary Journal of the Northeast of Minas Gerais

1. Regulatory and Institutional Framework

REMUNOM operates in accordance with:

  • ABNT NBR 6021 (Brazilian Standard for Scientific Periodical Presentation)

  • ISSN International Centre guidelines

  • Crossref metadata standards

  • International best practices in scholarly interoperability and bibliographic consistency

  • Digital preservation policies aligned with Rede Cariniana (IBICT – Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology)

  • International preservation initiatives including LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe), CLOCKSS, and Portico.

2. Historical Editorial Structure

Since its foundation in 2014, REMUNOM organized its editorial volumes on an annual autonomous basis, restarting the volume number at the beginning of each calendar year.

This internal structure did not affect:

  • DOI assignment and persistence

  • Article-level indexing

  • Citation traceability

  • Metadata registration

  • Digital preservation compliance

Each article has always been assigned an individual DOI, which serves as the primary persistent identifier.

3. Alignment with International Cumulative Volume Standards

In accordance with:

  • The prevailing interpretation of ABNT NBR 6021;

  • International ISSN practices;

  • The standard cumulative volume model adopted by established scientific journals;

REMUNOM has resolved to transition to a cumulative volume numbering system.

This decision reinforces bibliographic clarity, international standardization, and long-term editorial coherence.

4. Implementation Timeline

Beginning with the 2027 editorial year, REMUNOM will adopt a continuous cumulative volume sequence calculated from its founding year (2014).

Accordingly:

Year Volume
2014 Vol. 1
2015 Vol. 2
2016 Vol. 3
... ...
2026 Vol. 13
2027 Vol. 14

No retroactive renumbering will be applied to previously published issues, ensuring:

  • Stability of existing citations

  • Preservation of deposited metadata

  • DOI integrity

  • Indexing continuity

5. Digital Preservation Considerations

The transition in volume numbering does not affect digital preservation status, as:

  • The DOI remains the primary persistent identifier;

  • Preservation systems such as Rede Cariniana, LOCKSS, CLOCKSS, and Portico operate at the object and metadata level;

  • Archival integrity is independent of cumulative volume sequencing.

REMUNOM remains fully committed to long-term digital preservation, metadata consistency, and international best practices in scholarly publishing.
