BETWEEN BARS AND CARE: AN EXPERIENCE REPORT ON THE CHALLENGES AND EXPERIENCES OF NURSING IN CARING FOR PRISONERS

Abstract

This report describes the experience of nursing interns from the Santa Catarina Educational Institute/Guaraí College (IESC/FAG) at the Penal Unit of Guaraí - TO. During the supervised visits, the students performed triage, nursing consultations, and provided health education to the inmates, acting in a humanized and effective manner. The activity highlighted the essential role of nursing in promoting health within the prison system, even in the face of challenges such as ethical and legal issues, adaptation to the prison context, and the profile of the population served. The initiative provided practical learning and reinforced the importance of qualified listening and empathetic care for the incarcerated population, while also encouraging the development of professionals who are conscious and committed to health equity.
