THE ROLE OF THE DENTIST WITHIN THE MULTIPROFESSIONAL TEAM: IN THE CONTEXT OF HOME CARE

The Brazilian health system is organized in a regionalized manner, with Primary Health Care serving as the main point of entry, within which Home Care is incorporated to expand care delivery in the community. The Family Health Strategy plays a central role in addressing vulnerable populations; however, despite the inclusion of dentists in public health services, their practice remains largely influenced by the biomedical model, with a predominance of clinic-based activities and limited participation in home visits. In this context, the present study aims to conduct a descriptive integrative literature review of the dentist within the multiprofessional team in the home care setting. The literature search was carried out in the electronic databases LILACS, MEDLINE, BBO, PubMed, and SciELO, using the terms “Home visit” AND “Oral health” AND “Primary health care” OR “Family health strategy.” Inclusion criteria comprised original, full-text articles published in Portuguese or English and indexed in the aforementioned databases over the last fifteen years. The following were excluded from the present analysis: articles duplicated across different databases, literature reviews, and articles that did not address any of the questions raised in this study. The final sample consisted of 8 articles, and the identified contents were analyzed and categorized. The final sample consisted of eight articles, whose findings were analyzed and categorized. Home-based dental care, when integrated into multiprofessional teams, contributes to equitable and patient-centered care, particularly for individuals with limited access to conventional health services, through preventive, diagnostic, health promotion, and therapeutic actions. Nevertheless, organizational constraints, limited resources, weaknesses in team integration, and the predominance of a clinic-centered care model highlight the need for professional training, strengthened management, clearer role definition, systematic incorporation of extramural activities, and further research to improve access and effectiveness of home dental care.
