THE ROLE OF THE DENTAL SURGEON IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE: EXPERIENCE REPORT FROM A MULTIPROFESSIONAL FAMILY HEALTH RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Objective: To report on the work of a dental surgeon in Primary Health Care (PHC) in the context of a Multiprofessional Family Health Residency Program (PRMSF), as well as the contributions of this training process to professional practice. Method: This is a descriptive study, in the form of an experience report, based on the experiences of a dental surgeon resident in the Multiprofessional Family Health Residency Program at the State University of Piauí, in the municipality of Teresina, Piauí, Brazil, from April 2024 to December 2025. The experiences took place in different settings of the Health Care Network, with the Basic Health Unit as the central setting for practices, where health promotion, prevention, and recovery actions were carried out, in addition to activities in the areas of management, social control, and teaching. Results: Analysis of the reports showed that dental surgeons in PHC went beyond clinical care in the office to include home visits, collective actions at the BHU and in the territory, as well as in management and social control spaces. Of particular note was their work with the multidisciplinary team, which promoted shared care. Final considerations: The PRMSF is a powerful training tool, contributing to overcoming the biomedical model and reaffirming the strategic role of dental surgeons in PHC and in ensuring comprehensive care.
