Abstract

The growing aging population demands the implementation of comprehensive care and healthy aging strategies. In this scenario, dermatoglyphics, the study of papillary impressions, emerges as a promising tool for the early identification of predisposition to pathologies. These impressions are formed between the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and remain unchanged, functioning as stable markers of the relationship between genotype and intrauterine environment, revealing vulnerabilities to chronic diseases and tendencies toward frailty in senescence. This study aimed to analyze the scientific evidence on the use of dermatoglyphics in the investigation of clinical conditions associated with aging. This is a systematic literature review conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, following the PRISMA protocol and JBI quality assessment. Observational studies that analyzed dermatoglyphic patterns in adult and/or elderly populations were included. In the end, nine studies comprised the sample, encompassing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, breast cancer, myocardial infarction, schizophrenia, and chronic kidney disease. In general, the findings indicate associations between dermatoglyphic characteristics, such as ridge count, digital patterns, and asymmetry, with different clinical outcomes, suggesting possible relationships with biological susceptibility established in ontogenetic development. However, the predominance of observational designs, methodological heterogeneity, and the scarcity of studies specifically focused on the elderly population limit the robustness of the evidence. Dermatoglyphics demonstrates potential as a complementary tool for early screening, but the robustness of the current evidence requires caution and the standardization of collection protocols in future investigations.
