This article aims to investigate the importance of medieval mathematics in the evolution of calculus, highlighting the theoretical and practical advances developed during this historical period. To this end, attention was paid to identifying what history mentions as the main factors in the development of calculus, and to seeking out works and authors who demonstrated the advancement of calculus throughout history. A qualitative approach was applied, based on bibliographic and exploratory research on the evolution of calculus in the medieval period, focusing on the historical trajectory of mathematics and grounded in reference works in the field. Among the main authors used are Boher, Eves, Roque, and D’Ambrosio, whose research significantly contributed to understanding the advancement of mathematical thought over time. Thus, this study offers a possibility for understanding the historical process of mathematical knowledge, allows for a mathematical understanding of the knowledge shaped in the Middle Ages, and above all provides a broader analysis of the contributions that preceded the emergence of calculus, but, above all, reinforces the importance of the history of mathematics as an instrument for understanding the evolution of mathematical thought over time. In conclusion, this study has provided a more comprehensive understanding of the relevance of medieval mathematics in the evolution of calculus. By investigating the historical trajectory of this development, it was possible to recognize that calculus did not appear in isolation, but as a result of a frequent process of knowledge construction, encompassing diverse cultures, authors, and historical periods.
