Abstract

Introduction: The book Bioethics for Health Professionals, by Rego, Palácios and Siqueira-Batista (2009), presents a critical introduction to bioethics, focusing on the ethical training of professionals and students in the health field. The authors propose an expanded and situated approach to bioethics, articulating theory and practice in the face of moral dilemmas that emerge in clinical and collective contexts. Development: The book covers the historical emergence of bioethics, highlighting milestones such as Potter's thinking and the post-World War II codes. It then presents the main theoretical currents (principlism, protection bioethics, utilitarianism, casuistry and virtue ethics) applied to specific cases. The book also discusses the articulation between clinical and public health and ethical dilemmas at the beginning and end of life, such as abortion and orthotanasia, always defending respect for autonomy and human dignity. Conclusion: The work is a fundamental reference for teachers and researchers in bioethics, as it proposes a critical, dialogical ethics committed to social justice. It is essential reading for those seeking to understand the ethical foundations of health practices in Brazil.
