NATURE AND EDUCATION IN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY WESTERN CULTURE: EPISTEMOLOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS OF A COMPLEX HISTORY

This literature review article, anchored in Edgar Morin's complex thinking, presents and discusses the historical relationship betweennature, culture, and education. It reflects on how modern epistemology has influenced this relationship, creating serious problems for the biosphere, and how we could change the relationship between nature, culture, and education with the support of the sciences of complexity. We analyze the thoughts of modern authors, such as René Descartes, in order to understand how the unfolding of his thinking, along with others, has contributed to thecurrent stage of environmental degradation. Understanding that the modern way of viewing the world, which operates on principles of separation and reduction, has created enormous problems for life on Earth, we propose a reform of thought that can reconnect knowledge, decompartmentalize life, and revitalize nature.
