DIETARY TRANSITION AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS IN QUILOMBOLA COMMUNITIES IN BRAZIL: CULTURAL, SOCIOECONOMIC, AND FOOD ACCESS INFLUENCES

This study analyzes the impacts of dietary transition in Brazilian quilombola communities and its repercussions on nutritional status, considering cultural, socioeconomic, and food access factors. Through a narrative literature review conducted in the PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases, studies published between 2015 and 2025 addressing food, nutrition, and food security in quilombola populations were selected. The results indicate that urbanization, the increased consumption of ultra-processed foods, and the loss of traditional dietary practices have led to significant changes in the eating patterns of these communities. Such transformations are associated with worsening food insecurity, increased childhood nutritional deficits, and a higher prevalence of noncommunicable chronic diseases, such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Additionally, the literature highlights the erosion of ancestral knowledge and the weakening of food autonomy. Evidence also shows the coexistence of undernutrition and overweight, characterizing the double burden of malnutrition. It is concluded that intersectoral public policies, food and nutrition education initiatives, and the valorization of quilombola food culture are essential to promote health, food security, and nutritional sovereignty in these communities.
