Body image refers to how individuals perceive their own bodies, with body dissatisfaction being more frequent during adolescence due to the search for identity and social acceptance. The difference between perceived and idealized body image may trigger body dissatisfaction and be associated with the risk of developing eating disorders (EDs). This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between body image dissatisfaction and the risk of developing EDs among school adolescents. This was a cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative study involving adolescents aged 10 to 19 years, of both sexes, enrolled in elementary and high school at a private school located in a municipality in the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Two questionnaires were administered the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), to assess the risk of developing EDs, and the Silhouette Scale, to evaluate the presence of body dissatisfaction. In addition, demographic and anthropometric data were collected to assess nutritional status. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s exact test, adopting a significance level of 5% (p<0.05). A total of 123 adolescents participated in the study, of whom 75.6% (n=93) were eutrophic and 13.8% (n=17) were overweight. It was found that 28.5% (n=35) of the participants were at risk of developing EDs, while 60.2% (n=74) demonstrated body dissatisfaction. A significant association was observed between body dissatisfaction and the risk of developing EDs (p<0.05), indicating greater vulnerability among adolescents dissatisfied with their own body image. A high prevalence of body dissatisfaction associated with the risk of EDs was observed among adolescents, highlighting the importance of promoting awareness and dialogue in the school environment in order to encourage the development of healthy eating habits and a positive body image perception.
