Abstract

Introduction: Understanding the changes in female physical performance during the menstrual cycle (MC) is essential for optimizing training and reducing negative impacts. Given the growing pursuit of quality of life and athletic performance by women, this study aims to clarify how hormonal fluctuations during the MC affect physical performance. It is estimated that 85% of women of reproductive age experience symptoms such as fatigue and mood swings during the MC, which can compromise adherence to exercise. Objective: To analyze the influence of the signs and symptoms of Premenstrual Tension (PMT) on physical performance, focusing on muscle strength, throughout the different phases of the MC, offering scientific parameters to assist coaches and athletes in personalizing exercise programs, aiming to maximize results and minimize risks. Method: This is an exploratory and analytical literature review, aiming to map and critically analyze the scientific production on the influence of the MC on female physical performance. A qualitative approach based on content analysis was adopted, according to Bardin (2011). The searches were conducted in the PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases, using descriptors related to the menstrual cycle, physical performance, and ovarian hormones. Original articles conducted with women, published between 2015 and 2025, in Portuguese, English, or Spanish were included. The material was organized into three thematic axes: physiological fundamentals, physical performance, and practical applications. The main limitations involved the subjectivity of the analysis, methodological heterogeneity, and restricted access to some sources. Results and Conclusion: The initial search identified 303 articles, with the final sample consisting of 6. It was found that non-pharmacological strategies, such as regular exercise and healthy lifestyle habits, reduce symptoms and optimize performance. It is concluded that the planning of women's training should consider the phases of the menstrual cycle, promoting a more individualized and efficient approach.
