Abstract

Introduction: Airway obstruction by a foreign body, also known as choking, is one of the leading causes of accidental deaths in children in Brazil. According to the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics, the country ranks third in the list of children who are victims of choking. Objective: To analyze literature reviews emphasizing the importance of self-awareness among parents and family members within family health planning in cases of airway obstruction by a foreign body. Methodology: This is a qualitative research, the search for articles was conducted on specialized sites such as LILACS, SCIELO, Virtual Health Library (VHL) between the years 2015 and 2025. Inclusion criteria were used, such as: free access to the material, availability in Portuguese, and relevance to the proposed topic, using descriptors related to the term choking in children, first aid, health education. The exclusion criteria included not choosing restricted access, other languages, and works that did not address the main theme of the research. Results and Discussion: The pursuit of teachings from professionals and the knowledge absorbed by parents throughout prenatal care are of great importance, as the immediate recognition of airway obstructions by foreign bodies can significantly reduce the risk of fatalities. Thus, choking is a frequent and potentially fatal emergency, requiring immediate knowledge and technique from parents and caregivers. Conclusion: Studies show that the knowledge acquired by parents throughout this process is crucial for an immediate and effective response to cases of child choking. Thus, educational strategies guided by nurses become fundamental for accident prevention and the reduction of infant mortality.
