Introduction: During the transition to academic life, students undergo various adaptations and changes in their lifestyle, daily routine, social interaction, diet, and interpersonal relationships. These conditions can favor the consumption of legal drugs such as cigarettes and alcoholic beverages, as well as various types of medications. Objective: To evaluate the use of psychoactive substances and psychotropic medications by nursing students in a municipality in Mato Grosso. Material and method: A descriptive cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted in two higher education institutions. Data collection was carried out using a self-administered questionnaire with multiple-choice questions for nursing students in three different semesters. Results: Regarding alcohol consumption, students from the public university showed the highest results, especially tenth-semester students who expressed the highest value in relation to the habit of consuming alcoholic beverages. However, regarding adherence to the habit of drinking, neither semester associated alcohol consumption with their entry into university. Regarding smoking habits, our study demonstrates low adherence to this practice among students. Regarding the consumption of psychotropic drugs, the educational institutions did not show high rates of use of these medications. Conclusion: In our research, we did not find evidence of high consumption of alcohol or cigarettes by students, regardless of the institution or period of their undergraduate studies. Furthermore, the consumption of psychotropic drugs also does not show high levels among the semesters or educational institutions evaluated. However, students who still use these substances or combine their consumption are susceptible to negative experiences related to alcohol or cigarette abuse, leading to possible damage to their health (physical and mental).
