This text falls within the field of History of Education and aims to analyze the itineraries of the historical debate about censorship in Brazil, highlighting its implications in daily social and educational life. It is bibliographical research, based on a literature review and the note-taking technique as a methodological procedure. The analysis takes censorship as a central category, seeking to understand its manifestations in the political sphere throughout Brazilian history. Historically, the term originates from Latin and was associated with the function of evaluation and control in Ancient Rome, eventually acquiring connotations linked to the repression and control of ideas. In Brazil, censorship has been present in different historical periods, from the colonial period to the contemporary era, through mechanisms limiting the expression and circulation of ideas, frequently linked to the maintenance of power structures. In the educational field, such practices have also manifested themselves through control over teaching and teacher performance. Given this scenario, the study problematizes the historical limits of freedom of expression in the country, questioning to what extent individuals have been able to express ideas and access knowledge without suffering sanctions or repression.
