The gestational period promotes numerous physiological, hormonal, immunological, and behavioral changes that directly impact women’s general and oral health. In this context, dental follow-up during prenatal care is of utmost importance, since oral alterations, especially periodontal disease, may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as low birth weight and preterm birth. In addition, the presence of dental caries, pregnancy gingivitis, acid erosion, halitosis, and mucosal alterations is common during this period, reinforcing the importance of preventive, educational, and therapeutic actions. Given this context, this study aims to present the relevance of prenatal dental care (PDC), its integration with the multidisciplinary healthcare team in the care of pregnant women, and to understand pregnant women’s perceptions regarding PDC. This literature review was developed through the survey and analysis of scientific articles published over the last five years (2020–2025) in the SCIELO, LILACS, MEDLINE, and PubMed databases. Data analysis revealed low adherence to PDC, highlighting deficiencies in the provision of information, referral processes, and multidisciplinary performance within healthcare services. Most pregnant women do not receive adequate guidance regarding oral health during this period. Furthermore, factors such as higher educational level, access to medical appointments, and participation in educational activities favor the use of PDC. Therefore, strengthening primary healthcare is essential to ensure the promotion of maternal and child oral health.
