SUICIDE MORTALITY IN BRAZIL: A TEMPORAL ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL PROFILES AND SELF-INFLICTED INJURIES

Abstract

years; therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate the temporal analysis of the social profile and self-inflicted injuries related to suicide mortality in Brazil between 2017 and 2021. The method was based on an ecological/descriptive time-series study using secondary data from DATASUS. Results: 68,082 cases of suicide deaths were reported in Brazil between 2017 and 2021, with an increase in deaths over the years, a higher number of cases among males, and ages between 20 and 59 years. The most observed causes of death were in the category attributed to hanging, strangulation, and suffocation. Regarding the social profile related to sex, a relationship is suggested with behavioral factors such as hesitation and resistance among men to seek help in the face of economic and psychosocial instability. It is noteworthy that in the pursuit of discussing the social profile, the scientific literature relates characteristics of mental health, and during the years of research, with the COVID-19 pandemic. It is concluded that suicide constitutes a public health problem due to the increasing number of cases and consequences. Different factors have been analyzed regarding suicidal behavior in recent years, being considered a multifactorial conduct; however, it is highlighted in the current scenario that investing in approaches that promote mental health care is a strategy in the quest to better understand this mortality scenario.
