STUDY OF THE EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE AND TREATMENT OF TUBERCULOSIS IN THE STATE OF PIAUÍ FROM 2020 TO 2024

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem, especially among socially vulnerable populations. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological profile of tuberculosis in the state of Piauí between 2020 and 2024, considering sociodemographic, clinical, and treatment-related variables, as well as factors associated with therapeutic adherence and the challenges faced by primary care. This is a descriptive epidemiological study with a quantitative approach, conducted using secondary data obtained from DATASUS and the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). The results showed a significant increase in cases during the post-COVID-19 pandemic period, which may be related to difficulties in accessing healthcare services and the reduction of surveillance actions during the health crisis. A predominance of the disease was observed in males and individuals aged 60 years or older. The pulmonary form was the most frequent clinical manifestation. Among the vulnerable populations, people living with HIV/AIDS, the prison population, and homeless individuals stood out, presenting greater difficulties in treatment adherence and worse clinical outcomes. In conclusion, tuberculosis control requires integrated actions involving early diagnosis, strengthening of primary care, expansion of Directly Observed Treatment (DOT), epidemiological surveillance, and public policies aimed at reducing social inequalities.
