ANALYSIS OF DEATHS AND MORTALITY RATES FROM DIABETES MELLITUS IN THE STATE OF PIAUÍ BETWEEN 2015 AND 2024

The present study aimed to analyze deaths and mortality rates caused by Diabetes Mellitus in the state of Piauí, Brazil, between 2015 and 2024, using secondary data obtained from the Department of Informatics of the Brazilian Unified Health System (DATASUS). This is a descriptive, observational, and quantitative study based on the analysis of information regarding the total number of deaths, distribution by sex, and age-specific mortality rates in the state. The results showed a predominance of deaths among females during most of the analyzed period, as well as a significant increase in cases in 2022. A higher concentration of deaths was also observed among individuals over 60 years of age, suggesting a possible association between population aging and increased diabetes-related mortality. Mortality rates remained high throughout the years, indicating that Diabetes Mellitus continues to have a significant impact on public health in the state. Furthermore, factors such as difficulties in accessing healthcare services, low adherence to treatment, and the impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic may be associated with the increase in complications and mortality related to the disease. Therefore, the findings reinforce the need to strengthen public policies aimed at the prevention and control of Diabetes Mellitus, with emphasis on expanding access to information, healthcare services, and early diagnosis.
