ANALYSIS OF THE ETHICAL AND LEGAL ASPECTS OF THE USE OF EXTRACTED TEETH AND TOOTH BANKS BY DENTAL STUDENTS

This study aims to evaluate the ethical and legal aspects involved in the use of extracted teeth and tooth banks by dental students. This is a narrative bibliographical review with a documentary and observational approach. The databases used to search the literature were PubMED, SCIELO, LILACS and Google Scholar. The words used as a search method were "tooth bank", "dental students" and "ethical-legal aspects". Law 8.501 of 1992 already provides for the use of cadavers for teaching and academic research, but in relation to the use of dental elements for didactic pedagogical practices, for a long time there was a gap in the legislation as to how to legally obtain them. In addition to the problem of the illegal sale of teeth, it is important to emphasize that there is a risk of cross-infection related to the handling of infected teeth without prior sterilization. It is suggested that issues such as the ethical and legal aspects involved in handling and disposing of extracted human teeth should be addressed across the board in dentistry courses, as well as the implementation of a BDH as a way of contributing to professional practice in terms of valuing the dental element as an organ.
