THE IMPACTS OF MALOCCLUSION ON ATHLETES’ PERFORMANCE

Sports dentistry emerges as a fundamental area to identify and treat oral conditions that may interfere with performance, such as malocclusion, oral injuries and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Malocclusion, in particular, is a common condition among athletes, which affects breathing and swallowing, increasing the risk of dental trauma and, in addition, leading to the development of postural and balance problems. The present study aims to investigate the impacts of malocclusion on athletic performance, seeking to understand whether the lack of adequate occlusion can limit the performance of athletes. The research was developed through a literature review, with the aim of exploring the existing evidence on the topic and proposing possible interventions that aim to improve the athletic performance of individuals with this condition.
