THE ROLE OF NURSES IN CONTROLLING SYPHILIS: CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES IN THE TOCANTINS PRISON SYSTEM

Syphilis, a compulsorily notifiable sexually transmitted infection (STI), is increasingly important in public
health due to its physical, social and economic impact. This study is a literature review that analyzes the
high prevalence of syphilis among inmates in the prison system, where factors such as overcrowding and
risk behaviors create an environment conducive to the spread of the disease. Data indicates that
incarcerated individuals have infection rates up to five times higher than the non-incarcerated population,
reflecting the inadequate control of syphilis, especially in women of childbearing age. Nurses play a crucial
role in health promotion and infection control, carrying out educational actions and implementing
prevention protocols. Despite challenges such as lack of resources and stigma, training and developing
communication skills are essential to increase adherence to treatment. This study aims to investigate the
prevalence and gaps in syphilis control in the Tocantins prison system, highlighting the importance of
nurses' work in improving the health of inmates and public health in general.
