QUANTIFICATION OF CO₂ E EMISSIONS IN DIFFERENT ORGANIC SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT SCENARIOS

Inadequate management of organic solid waste constitutes one of the main contemporary environmental challenges, especially due to the high emissions of greenhouse gases associated with the traditional model of disposal in sanitary landfills. In this context, the present study is relevant as it quantitatively demonstrates the potential of sustainable technologies, such as biodigesters, to mitigate carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂eq) emissions and to promote practices aligned with the Circular Economy. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify CO₂eq emissions under different scenarios of organic solid waste management and treatment, evaluating the contribution of biodigester use within the Circular Economy framework. The methodology was based on a case study conducted in a restaurant located in the municipality of São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, involving the gravimetric characterization of the generated solid waste, on-site data collection, annual extrapolation of the information, and estimation of emissions using the national greenhouse gas calculation tool for solid waste management. Three management scenarios were simulated, comprising different combinations of sanitary landfill disposal, anaerobic digestion, composting, recycling, and energy recovery from biogas, in addition to the application of SWOT analysis to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with biodigester use. The results showed that the scenario with the greatest reliance on sanitary landfills presented the highest levels of CO₂eq emissions, whereas scenarios prioritizing biological treatment of organic waste and increased recycling rates promoted significant emission reductions. The scenario with the highest efficiency in biogas collection and energy recovery stood out as the most effective, presenting greater generation of environmental credits and lower climate impact. It is concluded that the adoption of biodigesters, combined with the reduction of landfill disposal and the strengthening of recycling practices, represents an environmentally viable strategy for organic waste management. The study recommends strengthening public policies, investments in infrastructure, economic incentives, technical training, and environmental education actions to expand the adoption of biological treatment technologies and consolidate sustainable practices based on the principles of the Circular Economy.
