Abstract

Traumatic brain injury is a major public health condition associated with high morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospitalization and relevant metabolic changes in critically ill patients. This study aimed to characterize the clinical and nutritional profile and to describe the in-hospital nutritional evolution of patients with traumatic brain injury admitted to a trauma referral hospital in the metropolitan region of Belém, Pará, Brazil. This was an observational, retrospective and exploratory descriptive study based on secondary data from medical records, including 15 adult patients hospitalized between August and October 2025. Sociodemographic, clinical, anthropometric, biochemical and nutritional therapy-related variables were analyzed, including Nutritional Risk Screening 2002, body mass index, arm circumference, calf circumference, nutritional route, complications and hospital outcomes. A predominance of male young adult patients and a high frequency of severe traumatic brain injury were observed. Nutritional screening identified relevant nutritional risk at admission. During hospitalization, reductions in body weight, body mass index and peripheral anthropometric measurements were observed, as well as clinical complications that may have influenced nutritional therapy progression. Considering the small sample size and the absence of robust inferential analysis, the findings should be interpreted as descriptive and hypothesis-generating. It is concluded that the studied population presented high clinical and nutritional vulnerability, reinforcing the need for early screening, serial monitoring and standardized recording of nutritional interventions.
