Non-communicable chronic diseases have shown a significant increase in prevalence over time, across various age groups, and are responsible for high morbidity and mortality. The objective of this research was to analyze the prevalence of risk and protective factors for non-communicable chronic diseases in the adult population. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, retrospective study, based on data collected from the Surveillance System for Risk and Protective Factors for Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases through Telephone Surveys. For the two capital cities analyzed, 1,598 individuals were considered eligible, with 50.1% from the municipality of Teresina (capital of the state of Piauí) and 48.9% from the municipality of São Luís (capital of the state of Maranhão). In Teresina, the highest occurrence of smoking (9.8%), consumption of minimally processed foods (33%), and bean consumption (61.8%) was found among men. In women, there was a high frequency of passive smoking (9.3%), obesity (21.7%), and physical inactivity (13%), higher fruit intake (33%), and physical activity for commuting (13.5%). Overweight had a prevalence above 50% in both Teresina and São Luís. Specifically in São Luís, there was a higher prevalence of consumption of ultra-processed foods (20%), soft drinks (14%), and physical activity during leisure time (51.8%). Regarding risk factors, men in both locations showed greater exposure to the development of NCDs, which points to the need for more specific care for this population group, regardless of location, with specific actions to promote and access health, and encourage self-care. As for protective factors, the data were very similar in the capitals evaluated, slightly higher among women in terms of healthier eating habits and among men in terms of more regular physical activity.
