The present article aims to research the debate and controversies surrounding the composition date, location, and authorship of the Deuteronomistic History (DtrH). We address the emergence of the Work, presenting Martin Noth's hypothesis and highlighting his main theses, such as a single author during the exilic period, likely in Palestine, and the work as a literary unity. Subsequently, we examine Frank Moore Cross’s position, which advocates for a double redaction: one during the pre-exilic period (Josianic) and another during the exile. Next, we discuss Rudolf Smend's position and the school that later bore his name, which defends multiple layers of composition, including a nomistic and a prophetic layer. This study is characterized as descriptive in its objectives and bibliographic in its methods, seeking to consult the primary works of the cited authors and some of their interpreters. Finally, we conclude that the Deuteronomistic History as developed by Noth, despite many criticisms and further elaborations, remains one of the most efficient responses to the literary corpus spanning from Deuteronomy to 2 Kings. Although subsequent theses have expanded the knowledge of the Work, we are still far from reaching any certainty or unanimity.
