Abstract

This article analyzes the challenges of film criticism practice in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, focusing on critics affiliated with the Brazilian Association of Film Critics (Abraccine). Grounded in the understanding of criticism as a discursive practice and a form of cultural mediation, the study investigates how structural, professional, and symbolic factors shape its production, circulation, and legitimation within a regional context marked by historical inequalities. Methodologically, this is a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive study based on semi-structured interviews conducted with critics working in Amazonas, analyzed through the Collective Subject Discourse (CSD) method. The findings reveal that film criticism in the region is affected by limited access to audiovisual works, fragile cultural infrastructure, precarious working conditions, and restricted access to broader circulation networks. On a symbolic level, challenges related to authority and professional recognition stand out, intensified by the dynamics of the digital environment and the centralization of Brazil’s cultural field. Despite these constraints, critics develop strategies of adaptation and resistance, such as the use of digital platforms, diversification of formats, and participation in collaborative networks. The study concludes that film criticism in Amazonas is not in decline but undergoing a process of reconfiguration, marked by tensions between structural limitations and possibilities for reinvention. This research contributes to expanding debates on film criticism in Brazil by emphasizing the importance of regional perspectives.

  • Caio Bentes Pimenta, Federal University of Amazonas

    Student in the Postgraduate Program in Information and Communication at the Federal University of Amazonas. I hold postgraduate degrees in journalism from Faculdade Cásper Líbero and in cultural management and production from the State University of Amazonas. I am a member of the Brazilian Association of Film Critics - Abraccine and the International Federation of Film Critics - Fipresci. Currently, I am a voter for the Golden Globe Awards.

  • Dr. Renan Albuquerque Rodrigues, Federal University of Amazonas

    Doctor in Society and Culture in the Amazon (Ufam). Associate Professor at Ufam and leader of the Center for Studies and Research in Amazonian Environments (Nepam/CNPq). He is a Permanent Professor in the Postgraduate Program in Information and Communication. He has completed postdoctoral internships in Anthropology (PUC-SP), Social Psychology (PUC-SP), Humanities (USP), and Communication (USP).
