Water stress caused by flooding can impair plant physiological processes, affecting germination, growth, and productivity, mainly due to reduced oxygen availability, leading to the development of morphoanatomical adaptations that favor oxygen diffusion from non-submerged aerial parts. This study aimed to evaluate seed germination and the initial development of Clitoria fairchildiana seedlings under flooded and non-flooded conditions. Initially, a biometric characterization of the seeds was performed, analyzing length, width, thickness, and mass, with average values of 404.5 mg, 15.7 mm, 14.3 mm, and 2.7 mm, respectively, similar to those reported in the literature. Part of the seeds was submerged in distilled water for seven days before the germination test, while another part remained as the control. The experiment was conducted in a B.O.D. chamber at 25 ºC with a 12-hour photoperiod, using six replicates of 15 seeds per treatment, evaluating germination percentage, mean time, speed, and synchronization index. Germination was high in the control (93%) and decreased after submersion (80%), although it showed increased speed, indicating an effect of pre-soaking. For initial development, seedlings were subjected to flooding for 52 days, with tubes submerged up to the plant collar, while the control remained without flooding. Height, stem diameter, and dry mass were analyzed, showing reduced leaf gain and biomass under stress, but with 100% survival. The plants exhibited adaptations such as hypertrophied lenticels and adventitious roots, indicating high plasticity in response to flooding.
