Abstract

Objective: To identify the benefits, effectiveness, and limitations of using positive pressure via high-pressure nasal cannula (HFNC) in patients admitted to the hospital emergency department during COPD exacerbations. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review. The sample consisted of people with COPD in exacerbation who benefit from or do not benefit from HFNC. This research was conducted using the SciELO, PEDro, BVS, and PubMed databases. Articles published in journals, complete, from 2020 to 2025 were included. Results: HFNC is more comfortable and tolerable than non-invasive ventilation (NIV), reduces muscle work, reduces areas of alveolar collapse, enabling normal oxygen saturation, preventing acute pulmonary edema, and reducing intubation and mortality rates. Conclusion: It is concluded from this evidence that HFNC, like NIV, has its peculiarities. However, when evaluating their effects during COPD exacerbation, in cases of acute renal failure, post-intubation cases, and others, there are not enough findings to ensure that the use of one of these therapies is superior to another, especially in cases of exacerbated COPD.
