This work focuses on the determinants of school dropout among primary school students in the Mogovolas district, Nampula (2023-2024), aiming to answer the following initial question: what are the determinants of school dropout among students in the Mogovolas district? The general objective was to analyze the determinants of school dropout in primary schools in the Mogovolas district, and the specific objectives were: to evaluate the effectiveness of current educational intervention policies to reduce dropout in Mogovolas; to present the barriers that influence student attendance and retention in Mogovolas; and to identify the factors that influence school dropout in Mogovolas. This is a qualitative research study, in the form of a case study, adopting an interpretative paradigm. Semi-structured interviews and document analysis were used as data collection techniques. Twenty people participated in the study as subjects, including dropouts, non-dropouts, teachers, and parents/guardians. The data were analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results indicate that policies are outlined in the General Regulations for Basic Education Schools and the Strategic Education Plan (PEE) 2020-2029, where structural challenges and policies are aligned with procedures, guidelines, and normative principles. These legal instruments guide the entire teaching and learning process in schools. Factors influencing school dropout include poverty, precarious living conditions, distance between home and school, early marriages, child labor, and teenage pregnancy.
