Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Children exposed to some type of domestic violence suffer from impairments in the recognition of facial emotions. Thus, individuals not exposed to domestic violence possess greater emotional skills and consequently a higher quality of life, mental health, interpersonal relationships, and emotional competence. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the consequences of domestic violence on the recognition of facial emotions in children. METHOD: The research consisted of 100 participants, divided into two groups. One group consisted of children who were being cared for in an institution focused on vulnerable situations, with potential indications of domestic violence (50 participants), and another group consisted of children of the same age who attended a private school (50 participants). The sample of children was evaluated using the following instruments: Domestic Violence Phrases Inventory (IFVD) and the Computerized Neuropsychological Battery (PennCNP). RESULTS: The results showed two groups with indications of domestic violence and two groups without indications of domestic violence, divided into two groups: School and Center. In the analysis of facial emotions, the ANCOVA statistical test and the binomial logistic regression model showed significance p<0.01 for the school group. Regarding the EDF40 test, there was significance in the accuracy of the Happy Response (p<0.01 for the school group and 0.02 without VD), Correct Sad Response (p<0.01 for the school group) and Total Correct Response (p<0.01 for the school group). In the ER40, there was significance in Correct Identification of Anger, Correct Identification of Fear and Correct Identification of Happy, Correct Identification of Sad (p<0.01 for the school group). For Correct Identification of Neutral, there was significance for the school group and without VD (0.01). CONCLUSION/FINAL CONSIDERATIONS Thus, children who have the opportunity to grow up with quality education, along with emotionally balanced families, tend to have a lower incidence of violent behaviors and less impairment in the recognition of facial emotions.
