The production of red clay ceramics generates significant environmental impacts, especially due to the generation of waste from defective pieces, which, after crushing, gives rise to chamotte. Proper management of this waste is essential, making it necessary to seek alternatives that reduce the impacts of improper disposal. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the influence of incorporating chamotte into substrates for the production of cucumber seedlings (Aodai variety). The experiment was conducted at the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo, Santa Teresa campus, in a nursery, using a completely randomized design in a 3 x 2 x 4 factorial scheme, considering three chamotte firing temperatures, two particle sizes, and four concentrations, with four replications. Variables related to seedling development were evaluated, such as root system length, shoot height, stem diameter, and fresh and dry mass of the shoot and roots. Statistical analysis was performed using R software, applying the F-test at a 5% probability level, Tukey's test for particle size, and regression analysis for temperature and concentration. The results showed that there is a limit to the incorporation of chamotte into the substrate, with high concentrations, especially those associated with coarser particles and higher temperatures, hindering seedling development. The most favorable condition was obtained with chamotte treated at 750°C and a particle size of 1 mm. In this situation, the ideal concentrations ranged from 9% to 13%, depending on the variable analyzed. It is concluded that the use of chamotte in substrates is a viable alternative, as it reduces production costs and contributes to environmental sustainability by promoting the reuse of industrial waste.
